To the Welsh Government and the Senedd,

We call on you to reject badger culling in Wales, and, at the very least, to hold a full public consultation before any change to the current policy is even considered.

Following a Senedd debate this week, there is renewed pressure to introduce a badger cull to tackle bovine TB. We believe this would be a costly, cruel, and ineffective mistake - and the evidence is on our side.

Culling failed in England. Between 2013 and 2025, licensed culling killed 247,880 badgers -  over half the estimated population - and the largest destruction of a protected species in living memory. Yet the UK government ultimately judged the cull "ineffective" and ended it in favour of vaccination.

Wales is already succeeding without it. Since 2012, new herd incidents of bovine TB have more than halved, and almost 95% of Welsh herds are now TB-free. This has been achieved through cattle testing, movement controls, and biosecurity, with no lethal wildlife control.

The disease is spread by cattle, not badgers. Around 94% of bovine TB transmission is cattle-to-cattle. You cannot solve a cattle disease by shooting wildlife.

We are demanding:

- No badger cull in Wales. Maintain and strengthen the science-led, cattle-focused approach that is already working.

- A full public consultation before any change to badger policy is considered, so that the people of Wales, the scientific evidence, and the welfare of a protected species are all properly heard.

- Honest use of evidence. Any future policy must be based on transparent, independently scrutinised science — not selectively presented figures designed to justify a predetermined outcome.

Wales has spent fourteen years proving that bovine TB can be tackled humanely and effectively. Please don't throw that away.
