Dear Secretary of State (Emma Reynolds MP)

Despite the Hunting Act, wildlife persecution remains widespread in the UK. Hunts continue to exploit loopholes, such as "trail hunting," to conduct illegal activities. Inconsistent enforcement of the Act across regions further exacerbates the problem.

We are asking therefore that you understand and act upon the following Key Issues and Proposed Solutions

Eliminate All Exempt Hunting:
Remove all exemptions that currently allow certain forms of hunting. This will prevent hunts from exploiting loopholes to conduct or conceal illegal activities.

Ban ‘Trail Hunting’:
Recognise "trail hunting" as a smokescreen for illegal hunting. Follow Scotland’s lead to ban trail hunting entirely.

End Terrier Work:
Prohibit terrier work, which often leads to damage of badger setts and is a cover for badger baiters. Remove exemptions for using dogs below ground.

Strengthen Enforcement and Resources:
Equip police with enhanced search and seizure powers. Provide training and resources for effective enforcement.

Increase Sentencing Severity:
Align sentencing for hunting crimes with Animal Welfare Act penalties. Strengthen fines to deter organisations and individuals.

Extend Time to Charge Suspects:
Extend the statutory time limit for prosecuting hunting offences.

Clarify Legal Definitions and Accountability:
Define hunting activities and responsibilities clearly. Apply vicarious liability to landowners and hunt leaders.

Hold Organisations Accountable:
Make corporate bodies and organisations accountable for members’ hunting crimes.
