Dear Morrisons Management,

We contacted you a week ago regarding the serious incident in which a gull was left trapped in bird netting at your Dunoon store for more than 24 hours. We have received no response or acknowledgement.

As outlined in our original email, residents alerted the store after a live gull became trapped in damaged netting on the roof and was left hanging by their wing. Despite attempts to get help from the store, the bird remained trapped until residents contacted the fire brigade, who attended and freed them.

Tragically, it is believed the gull was later euthanised because of the extent of their injuries.

We also raised serious concerns about the condition of the netting itself, which was visibly damaged and had a hole in it, creating an ongoing risk to wildlife.

We asked Morrisons to:

- Immediately remove the dangerous bird netting.
- Replace the netting with humane alternatives, with advice sought from organisations such as Humane Wildlife Solutions.
- Introduce mandatory checks of all wildlife deterrents at least once every 24 hours, so trapped animals, holes, damage or other hazards are identified and addressed immediately.

A week later, we still have no confirmation that any of these concerns have been addressed.

This incident resulted in an animal suffering for more than 24 hours and ultimately losing their life. Silence from Morrisons is not acceptable.

Property owners are responsible for ensuring bird netting is properly installed, regularly inspected and maintained so that it does not pose a danger to wildlife. Where a live bird becomes trapped, action should be taken promptly to have the bird safely released. Allowing damaged or poorly maintained netting to continue trapping birds, or failing to act when a trapped bird is known to be suffering, may amount to a wildlife or animal welfare offence.

We expect an urgent, substantive response confirming what action has been taken, whether the damaged netting has been removed, and what measures Morrisons is putting in place to ensure another animal does not suffer or die in the same way in any of your 497 superstores.
