Dear MP,

I am writing as your constituent to express my deep concern about the Planning and Infrastructure (PI) Bill. If passed, this legislation will have devastating and irreversible consequences for British wildlife and the natural environment. I urge you to oppose it in Parliament.
The Bill proposes to allow developers to destroy vital habitats by paying a so-called “Nature Restoration Levy.” This commodification of nature is fundamentally flawed. Ancient woodlands, wetlands, and species-rich grasslands are not interchangeable. Once they are destroyed, they cannot simply be recreated elsewhere. As ecologists and conservationists repeatedly warn, biodiversity is location-specific: habitats carry centuries of ecological complexity that cannot be replicated by planting trees or designating land somewhere else.
The UK is already in the grip of a biodiversity emergency. One in seven species faces extinction and 41% are in decline. Yet this Bill weakens local environmental protections and risks turning conservation into a pay-to-destroy scheme, where fragile ecosystems are bulldozed for short-term gain with no obligation to repair the damage where it actually occurs.
Equally worrying are the measures to fast-track major infrastructure projects by easing compulsory land purchases and diluting Environmental Impact Assessments. This opens the door to environmentally destructive projects such as airport expansions and new roads being pushed through with minimal scrutiny and maximum environmental cost.
Species already under severe pressure, such as bats, newts, and badgers, could lose the limited legal safeguards they currently rely on. Allowing their habitats to be destroyed in exchange for financial contributions is not conservation—it is a licence for destruction.
This is not the vision of a government serious about environmental protection. At a time when the UK has international obligations to halt biodiversity loss, we should be strengthening safeguards, not dismantling them.
True progress is measured not in concrete poured, but in ecosystems preserved and species protected. I urge you to stand up for nature and ensure that planning reform does not come at the expense of our country’s irreplaceable wildlife. Please oppose the PI Bill and press for genuine, science-based solutions that protect both people and planet.
The UK’s wildlife deserves better. The public demands better.
