We call on the UK Government to stop approving new fossil fuel extraction projects and produce a legally binding, properly funded plan to phase out existing UK oil and gas production through a fair transition to renewable energy.

Why this matters

Wildfires are already tearing through habitats across the UK. Animals are being burned alive, displaced and left without food or shelter. As extreme heat and drought become more frequent, the destruction will only intensify.

Parliament declared an environment and climate emergency in 2019, yet the UK continues to extract fossil fuels and permit projects that lock us into further emissions.

The Government cannot claim to confront the climate crisis while allowing new oil, gas and coal extraction. Every new project prolongs our dependence on the fuels driving climate breakdown and places wildlife, communities and future generations at greater risk.

We are calling on the Government to:

Immediately stop approving new fossil fuel extraction projects.
End the issuing of new oil, gas and coal licences.
Establish a legally binding timetable for phasing out existing extraction.
Invest in renewable energy and a fair transition that protects workers and communities.
Strengthen action to protect wildlife and restore habitats threatened by extreme weather.

Declaring an emergency means treating it like one. The Government must stop expanding the industry fuelling this crisis and begin a fair, managed transition away from fossil fuels.
