The House of Lords has given wildlife a vital lifeline. Now it is up to MPs to protect it.
Last week, hundreds of peers voted for two crucial amendments to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Amendment 130 would stop corporations from using so-called Environmental Delivery Plans to buy their way out of environmental damage. It would make sure local planning authorities have to consider biodiversity loss and the preservation of nature before approving new developments. Amendment 94 would protect England’s precious chalk streams by officially recognising them as “irreplaceable habitats.”
Together, these amendments would stop developers from bulldozing vital wildlife habitats and then paying into a central fund to “offset” the damage somewhere else. They would also safeguard some of our most threatened natural environments from further destruction.
But these wins are far from secure. The Bill is now returning to the House of Commons, where MPs will decide whether to keep or scrap these protections. Labour’s Bill is designed to fast-track new developments, and unless MPs vote to uphold these amendments, wildlife will be left defenceless against corporate greed.
Use the form below to email your MP and demand that they vote for nature. Tell them to back Amendments 130 and 94 and protect wildlife, habitats and the natural world before it is too late.
