Dear Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,

Now that the public consultation on hunting with dogs is open, I am writing to urge you to ensure that its findings lead swiftly to decisive action, not further delay.

For too long, the failure to strengthen the Hunting Act has allowed the continued abuse of wildlife under the guise of legal activity. While consultations have been postponed and reform delayed, hunts have continued to exploit loopholes, and wild animals have continued to suffer as a result.

Foxes, deer, hares, mink and otters remain at risk every day that exemptions persist and enforcement is undermined. This is not a historic issue, it is an ongoing animal welfare crisis happening in real time.

The consultation must not become another holding exercise. Once responses are received, the government must act without hesitation to deliver on its commitments. This means implementing clear, robust reforms that end the use of trail hunting as a cover for illegal hunting, remove all existing exemptions and loopholes, and introduce meaningful penalties that act as a genuine deterrent.

It is also critical that the government recognises the risk of hunts adapting their practices to evade strengthened laws. Drag hunting and clean boot hunting must be carefully scrutinised to ensure they do not become the next smokescreen for illegal activity, as trail hunting has done.

Public opinion is clear. A strong majority of the public supports a full ban on hunting with dogs and expects the government to follow through on its promises. This is a test of political will as much as policy.

The government was elected with a commitment to end hunting with dogs. That commitment must now be honoured in full.

I urge you to act decisively on the outcome of this consultation and to bring forward legislation that finally ends hunting with dogs, without loopholes, exemptions, or avenues for abuse.
