Dear NatureScot Board Members,

I am writing to urge the NatureScot Board to discuss public concerns about the Guga hunt licence as a matter of urgency at tomorrow’s Board meeting on 14th May. If this cannot be accommodated, I ask that it be formally scheduled for the next Board meeting on 2nd July.

NatureScot should not grant a licence for the 2026 Guga hunt.

The annual killing of young Gannets is increasingly out of step with modern conservation principles, public opinion, and Scotland’s international reputation as a nation that leads on biodiversity recovery. At a time when seabird populations face mounting pressures from avian influenza, climate change, and declining marine ecosystems, allowing this hunt to continue sends the wrong message.

As Board members, you are bound by a code of conduct to make decisions "solely in terms of public interest". In this matter, it is clear that the public interest lies in protecting wildlife, not serving the private interests of a very small number of individuals through the licensing of this hunt.

I urge the Board to:

Do not issue a licence for the 2026 hunt;
Formally discuss the Guga hunt at Board level as a matter of urgency;
Begin a transparent review into ending the licensing of the hunt permanently.
