Dear B&Q,

We, the undersigned, demand the immediate and safe release of the 47+ jackdaws currently trapped behind bird netting at your Clacton-on-Sea store, CO15 3TP.

These birds are suffering right now. Trapped behind netting, they face starvation, dehydration, injury and a slow, distressing death, on your premises, in full view of your customers.

We remind you of your legal obligations. All wild birds, their eggs and their active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If any of these jackdaws are nesting, you cannot legally move, destroy, damage or interfere with those nests or eggs, or kill or injure the birds. Any removal of netting must be carried out carefully and professionally so that every bird is released unharmed and any active nests are left undisturbed. Anything less risks criminal offences being committed.

This is not the first time. Birds were trapped behind netting at your premises last year in a near-identical incident. You are now a repeat offender. A responsible retailer would have learned from that failure. Instead, the same suffering is happening again at the same company, at the same location. Therefore, it is clear your netting demonstrably does not work.
Netting that traps 47+ birds behind it is not "deterring" wildlife, it is failing at the one thing it exists to do, while creating an animal welfare crisis in the process. It is clearly not being inspected or maintained to any standard at which it could ever function correctly. Poorly maintained netting is not a bird deterrent; it is a death trap. Regulations and basic duty of care require that any netting installed is properly maintained and monitored, yours plainly is not.

As a direct result of the above we ask you to:
 1. Remove the netting and safely release all trapped birds by tomorrow, using competent , humane, non-lethal professionals.
 2. Confirm that no active nests, eggs or dependent young will be touched, moved or destroyed, in line with the law.
 3. Commit to not reinstalling netting at this site, as it has demonstrably failed. 
There is a better way. Effective, humane and more economical alternatives to netting exist. Netting has been proven, at your own stores, not to work. It is inhumane, ineffective and indiscriminate in the wildlife it harms.
