Amazon UK: Stop the Sale of Glue Traps!

Glue traps are among the cruelest pest control devices still being sold in the UK.

Animals caught on them can suffer for hours or even days, trapped, terrified, and slowly dying from injury, dehydration, or exhaustion.

Across the UK, the law is moving to restrict and ban their use because of this suffering. And yet, they are still being sold online, easily accessible to anyone.

We’re calling on Amazon UK to take responsibility and end the sale of glue traps.

I am writing to urge Amazon UK to take immediate action to end the sale of glue traps to customers across England, Wales and Scotland.

Under the Glue Traps (Offences) Act 2022, it is a criminal offence in England to use glue traps for rodents except under a tightly controlled licensing system, limited to professional pest controllers operating in exceptional circumstances. In Wales, glue traps are banned under the Agriculture (Wales) Act 2023. In Scotland, the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024 will ban the use, possession and sale of rodent glue traps from 1 July 2026.

While some glue traps are marketed for use on insects, the direction of law across the UK is clear. The use of these devices on rodents is increasingly restricted due to the severe animal welfare concerns they raise.

Despite this, glue traps remain readily available for purchase on Amazon UK.

This raises serious concerns. There is clear, publicly visible evidence on Amazon UK listings, including customer reviews and user-uploaded images, indicating that these products are being used to catch rats and mice in the UK. In many cases, this appears to be inconsistent with current legal restrictions on their use.

This creates a significant gap between how these products are marketed and how they are being used in practice.

The harm caused by glue traps is well documented. Animals caught on them can suffer for extended periods, often experiencing severe distress, injury, dehydration and exhaustion before death. This level of suffering is widely regarded as inhumane and has led to increasing legal restrictions across the UK.

The availability of these products without restriction raises important questions about whether sufficient safeguards are in place to prevent misuse.

The RSPCA has also raised concerns, urging members of the public to report the use of glue traps to the police via 101. This reflects the seriousness of the issue and the growing recognition that misuse of these products may be unlawful.

Taken together, this is not simply a reputational issue. It raises important legal and ethical concerns about the continued availability of glue traps to the general public, particularly where there is clear evidence of misuse.

There is a clear and practical solution. Amazon UK has the ability to restrict the sale and delivery of these products by location, including through postcode controls, or to remove them from the UK platform entirely. These measures would better align with the direction of UK law and reduce the risk of unlawful use.

The impact of such action could be significant in reducing unnecessary animal suffering.

Amazon UK has previously faced scrutiny regarding the sale of harmful products. This is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and ensure that its marketplace reflects both legal requirements and evolving standards of animal welfare.

I urge you to act without delay by restricting or ending the sale of glue traps to UK customers.
